Jindal got separated from his partner on Monday afternoon in the Paradise Meadows and Mount Albert Edward area of the park.

It is the sixth-highest peak on Vancouver Island at more than 2,000 metres tall.

At the same time, Jindal decided to descend to a nearby lake, and that’s when things took a wrong turn.

“Unfortunately, he misjudged and picked the wrong lake, and in this environment, trying to take a shortcut puts you in extremely dangerous, extremely steep, and heavily wooded terrain,” Berry said in an interview Thursday.

“He took a significant fall and sustained significant injuries, and he ended up on a ledge,” said Berry, adding that he had been stranded in steep terrain until being found by crews on Thursday.

Jindal’s disappearance has not only sparked a rescue operation, but also triggered the RCMP to send out a missing person release.

An RCMP helicopter was searching in the area on Thursday and saw Jindal waving, prompting them to turn around and rescue crews brought him to safety.

Berry said the rescue was conducted by a medical team with a hoist-equipped helicopter, and the hiker was transferred to B.C. Emergency Health Services and the critical care paramedics.

Berry said he can’t talk about Jindal’s health conditions, but it’s expected that dehydration and hypothermia would be concerns after spending being on the cliffside for days with little food under warm temperatures.

Volunteers from seven teams across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland carried out the rescue operation.
