The month was wetter than August of 2025, but drier than the record 44.9mm of rain in August of 2024. That month did see two days with significant rainfall including 14.2 mm on the 16th and a record 15mm on the 27th.

Katsademas said it was typical for Vernon summers to see one or two days of significant rainfall having major contributions to monthly precipitation totals.

The storm that brought the recent rain come from the south, but another system from the opposite direction was expected to bring even more rain to Vernon and the Okanagan.

“We have a low pressure system that’s building up over Northern B.C. and Alaska, and it’s going to start moving southward, and in advance of that there’s some troughing or smaller scale rainfall that’s possible,” Katsademas explained.

The forecast called for a 30 per cent chance of showers in Vernon Tuesday, September 1, but that will increase to 60 per cent for the rest of the week as the major system moves into the valley.

The meteorologist stated the exact amount of rain the storms could bring was not known at the time, but added it was also unlikely to bring lightning to the valley.

Katsedemas could not speak on if recent the rain helped with the drought or water scarcity issues facing Vernon and the Okanagan, but did say that “in general, rain helps.”
