Former mayor of Spallumcheen running in fall election

A man who served two terms as Mayor of Spallumcheen is looking to get back into local politics.

Guenter Reiger announced his plans to run in the fall municipal election. He previously sat in the mayor’s chair between 1986 and 1996. He also ran in the 2008 election, but did not win the seat.

Reiger said that while he was Mayor of Spallumcheen, there were six years when the residential tax rates were not increased, but the municipality was still able to maintain services and have an open and transparent administration.

“I like to get the job done in a cost-effective way, using taxpayer dollars effectively,” Rieger said in a release.

The candidate had four key points to run on.

  • Responsible and Balanced Growth: supporting orderly development o ensure long-term community sustainability while opposing overdevelopment
  • Protecting Agricultural Heritage: raising concerns regarding proposed high developments; questioning the scale of the new wastewater recovery plant needed to serve it; protecting the over 54,000 acres of agricultural land within Spallumcheen
  • Accountable Leadership: serving the electorate by “rejecting self-serving political agendas;” restoring a straightforward and accountable approach to municipal office; leading with “unquestionable integrity”

Votes will be cast in the local general election Oct. 17.
