Armstrong’s Chinese Memorial Moves Forward

A final 50-page report on creating a Chinese Memorial in Huculak Park in Armstrong is finally complete.

The history of the city should be reflective of it’s strong Chinese background that once saw 900 mostly male former railroad workers make the city their home.

What or how that should be accomplished remains up in the air according to Mayor Chris Pieper.

“We just know that we want to do it. We have some ideas but we’ll be working on the details of what we could put there, a gazebo or whatever in there to recognize them.”

Pieper says the City will work with it’s author, Asia Jong, this summer to finalize how that heritage can be honoured in the park.

“We’ll be working with Asia, working with UBC Okanagan and the Heritage Advisory Committee on a design and what we really want in the memorial part of Huculak Park.”

Pieper says $80-thousand dollars has been set aside for initial construction in the park, but the memorial will be over and above that.

“The actual heritage part of it we will have to do a separate budget on that and it will probably be put into next year’s budget.”
