Impaired driving blamed in Lake Country head-on crash

An impaired driver is facing penalties after a head-on crash in Lake Country.

Police say it happened on Tuesday and sent one person to hospital. It left two vehicles heavily damaged, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Police say officers were called to Glenmore Road at Shanks Road at about 9 p.m. on June 16, 2026, after reports of a two-vehicle collision.

Investigators determined a southbound SUV failed to properly take a curve, crossed into the oncoming lane, and struck a passenger car head-on. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were rendered inoperable.

Both drivers remained at the scene. Police say the SUV driver told witnesses they may have been impaired, prompting a roadside investigation. Breath samples confirmed alcohol impairment.

The driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The SUV driver was taken to hospital by ambulance for assessment. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Witnesses assisted at the scene and provided key information to investigators.

“It is disappointing to see this as it is the second head-on collision in just three weeks involving alcohol in our community,” said Staff Sgt. Jon Collins, Lake Country detachment commander. “Our officers remove hundreds of impaired drivers from the road every year and will continue to actively target this dangerous and reckless behaviour. Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and death on our roads, and it is entirely preventable.”
