Dust Advisory Returns

For the second time this winter, a dust advisory has been issued for Vernon.

The Ministry of Environment and Interior Health say there are high concentrations of course particulates in the air, which are expected to remain until there is rain or snow.

The dusty conditions are mainly caused by road traffic stirring up traction materials that have accumulated on roadways.

“PM10 concentrations — particles with diameter up to 10 millionth of a metre — are currently above advisory levels,” says the ministry.

“Latest measurements at the Vernon Science Centre station indicate an hourly average of 61 micrograms per cubic metre. The average for the past 24 hours is 62 micrograms per cubic metre, which exceeds the provincial air quality objective of 50 micrograms per cubic metre.”

People with medical issues may want to take precautions.

“Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted,” says the release. “Staying indoors and in air-conditioned spaces helps to reduce particulate exposure. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.”
