Community Mailboxes Targeted

Feb 20, 2017 | 12:30 PM

The advice to anyone who uses a community mailbox in the North Okanagan is to regularly pick up their mail after a series of mailbox thefts.

Canada Post had told RCMP of several break-ins to boxes in areas of Coldstream and Lavington since Feb. 13th.

An area covering Ravine Drive, Upland Drive, Crestview Drive and Kalamalka Road had its mailboxes broken into Feb. 13th, while mailboxes around Learmouth Road and Bessette Road were pried open Feb.17th.

Last month, a number of mailboxes in the Vernon area were targeted.

It’s not certain what was taken other than some mailed items, but police say it’s very possible the same suspect or suspects are involved.

“That’s something were are looking at, and we’re working with Canada Post to try and figure out exactly who is involved,” adds Noseworthy.

Noseworthy says the break-ins can lead to the suspects trying to cash in.

“We get cases of fraud in cases where cheques have been delivered, that have been cashed or used inappropriately. We also get cases of identity theft. And then if you’re unlucky enough to have your grandma send you cash for your birthday, that’s something else they may be looking for,” says the media relations officer.
