Trades Training For Women

Feb 17, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Jobs in the trades are expected to be in demand in future years — and it’s not just men who can fill those.

Women can find out more about careers in plumbing, automotive, welding and others at a meeting next week at Okanagan College’s Vernon campus.

Kim Noakes, marketing and recruiting coordinator for Women In Trades training, says they’re holding a one hour introduction Feb. 22 from 5 to 6 pm.

“We will be discussing the program and what’s included. We do a lot of safety and orientation, and an introductory to basic hand tools and power tools,” says Noakes

The 12 week training program is funded by the BC and Canadian governments to encourage more female apprentices in BC.

Noakes is a former welder herself.

“Initially it started off as a hobby in high school and then I went to Okanagan College for my years of training. I’ve worked here as well as in Alberta.”
