Lumby Hopes to Expand Fire Protection Plan

Feb 8, 2017 | 8:21 AM

Residents in Lumby are among the tops in the Province when it comes to interest in participating in a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
An initial plan dealing with the Mountainview sub-division is done and now the Village is hoping for approval of a grant to move on to the Cedar Ridge sub-division next according to Acting Mayor Lori Mindnich.
“We are pretty well surrounded by lots of forest and lots of trees and a lot of our older  houses are made of flammable material, so we are looking at different ways to keep sparks from jumping and starting another fire.”
Acting Mayor Lori Mindnich says council wants to be pro-active on the issue not reactive.
“More than half the people will buy into it because probably 75% of our residents are surrounded by trees and it’s a very real possibility.”
Mindnich notes things could move quickly if this latest grant is approved.
If everything goes perfectly, I think they will start doing open houses in the spring if we get the grants.”
