Council Supports Electric Taxis

Feb 6, 2017 | 7:30 PM

Vernon council will provide a letter of support for a new green taxi service in the city.

Current Taxi wants to put two Tesla electric cars on the road, providing competition for the current 30 cars in the area.

Councillor Brian Quiring says the company will be seeking a license from BC’s Passenger Transportation Board.

“I think it’s a great idea to have these electric cars. (Question: Will it increase the competition? )They are only bringing two into town so it should be fine,” Quiring told Kiss FM.

Mayor Akbal Mund says council has a number of reasons to support their application.

“It is environmentally friendly. We’re going to have cabs around town that are just using electricity. Is that going to help reduce the carbon (emissions)? It sure is, so I think it’s a great idea.”

Current Taxi is also providing taxi service in Kelowna.
