Science Centre Viewing For Eclipse

Aug 17, 2017 | 5:58 AM

According to NASA, experiencing a total solar eclipse where you live happens about once in 375 years.

Vernon won’t get a total eclipse, but should get some darkness as the moon covers the sun around 10:25 Monday morning.

Okanagan Science Centre manager Irene McKechnie says they will be holding a viewing from 9:30 to 11 Monday.

“The maximum eclipse is going to happen around 10:25, but we’ll have eclipse glasses for participants who come there, as well as a telescope with solar filter. We have some solar binoculars, and we’ll be talking about how you can make pinhole viewers with paper,”McKechnie tells Kiss FM.

McKechnie has read Vernon will get an 80 percent eclipse.

“So it won’t be a total eclipse of the sun, but 80 percent is still going to be noticeable, I would expect.”

McKechnie says they will hold the event in their parking lot and it’s free to take part.
