Swimmer to traverse Okanagan Lake in support of Foundry projects

An open water swimmer will try to tackle Okanagan Lake in support of local mental health programs.

From July 10 to 12, Jessie Harewicz will attempt to swim the 106 kilometres of Okanagan Lake from Vernon to Penticton as a fundraiser in support of Foundry projects in Vernon, Kelowna and Summerland.

The attempt will see Harewicz in the water for a combined 48 to 52 hours over those days, swimming though changing weather, cold water, darkness and fatigue, and accompanied only by a support crew. The Vancouver-based ultra-marathon open-water swimmer will also follow the traditional marathon-swimming rules, meaning she will not wear a wetsuit, touch the boat, or take any rest stops.

“This swim is about showing young people that they are worth showing up for,” Harewicz said.

“The challenges I will face in the water are temporary. The challenges many young people face with their mental health can feel overwhelming and isolating. If this swim can help bring support closer to home for even one young person, then every kilometre will be worth it.”

The swim will go in support of the Foundry sites and the programs they offer for youth and young adults aged 12 to 24 facing mental health issues.

“People often ask me why I would choose to swim this far,” Harewicz stated.

“The answer is simple: because young people deserve support, hope and a place to turn. If swimming across a lake helps make that possible, then it is a challenge worth taking.”

People can follow the swimmer’s progress through her social media, and donations in support of the swim can be made online here.
