Kari Gares running for Mayor of Vernon with focus on innovation, infrastructure and future generations

A City Councillor will be taking a run at the mayor’s seat in Vernon’s upcoming municipal election.

Kari Gares, running for Mayor of Vernon, said in a release that the city’s future success depends on creating a community where people can build careers, raise families, and build up the community for generations to come.

As part of her campaign, Gares highlighted the importance of economic resilience, infrastructure planning, and creating opportunities for youth to stay in Vernon.

“Our young people need reasons to stay,” Gares said.

“That means building a community where innovation is encouraged, businesses can grow, and meaningful careers are available.”

She added there was an opportunity to build a community where families, entrepreneurs and businesses can succeed, and that ‘the decisions we make today will shape the Vernon future generations inherit.”

The mayoral candidate stated Vernon must continue evolving as a regional hub, but should also protect the unique qualities of the community.

She believed economic development to be connected to thoughtful planning, reliable infrastructure, and a municipality that supports investment.

“Vernon’s growth is not limited to its city core,” Gares stated.

“Communities and neighbourhoods across our region depend on reliable infrastructure, responsive municipal services, and long-term planning that keeps pace with how our city is evolving.”

As Mayor, Gares said she would put a focus on ensuring investments in roads, utilities and services that reflects areas of growth in Vernon, and not just where it traditionally been developed.

The candidate also highlighted the importance of recognizing Vernon’s role as a destination community.

“Vernon is home to remarkable resort and lifestyle communities,” she said, pointing to Predator Ridge and other lifestyle developments as playing key roles in strengthening Vernon’s profile and economic future.

“These are not just amenities. They are economic contributors that attract residents, visitors, businesses, and investment from across Canada.”

Gares added that, through her work with the Regional District of North Okanagan, she understands many of the regional challenged require cooperation beyond the municipal boundaries.

“The issues facing our community do not stop at city limits,” she stated.

“Water, transportation, land use, and economic planning require regional thinking and strong relationships.”

She also emphasized that Vernon had an opportunity to “plan intentionally” is order to “build a community where families, entrepreneurs and businesses can succeed,” adding “the decisions we make today will shape the Vernon future generations inherit.”

Gares was the first candidate to confirm a bid for the mayor’s seat with Vernon Matters.

The general local election goes October 17.
