Mayor of Vernon ready to work with new provincial government, unsure of changes to investments

The Mayor of Vernon is ready to work with the incoming provincial government, though she is unsure if that will see any changes to investments or programs the city had previously accessed.

The Conservative Party of B.C. ousted the B.C. NDP in the snap election this fall, and Mayor Kari Gares said they will need some time to evaluate how they plan to govern and what sort of grants and programs they wish to continue or change.

“I think there’s going to be a bit of a delay as they figure that process out, but really it’s business as usual [for us at the city],” Gares told Vernon Matters.

“I think there’s always a concern in the back of your mind when you have a change of government. Once they get in what kind of shifts are they going to make, where are those shifts going to be, are those shifts going to be in things that right now we’ve been getting a lot of grant dollars from?

“Really we can make a bunch of assumptions but ultimately at the end of the day we have to wait for them to kind of get in there and get their feet wet for us to actually make any progress and see exactly where that’s going to go.”

In the meantime, Gares said she would continue to advocate for Vernon, its residents, and the needs of the community.

Additionally, Kevin Acton, the long-time mayor of Lumby, was elected as the Conservative MLA for Vernon-Lumby in the recent provincial election.

Gares and Acton previously worked together through their roles in their respective municipal governments, and the Mayor said she hoped that relationship carried over into their new positions.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with MLA-Elect Acton for the last eight years, so we’ve already built a lot of collaboration that way, we’ve got a really good working relationship, so I think we’ll be able to actually continue to work through that in his new role,” Gares explained.

“I’m pretty excited for what the future holds and what’s in front of us.”

Results of the provincial election will be finalized November 6, and the MLA’s were scheduled to be sworn in November 19.
