Update: Fire In BX

Aug 16, 2017 | 6:44 PM

Update: 6:45 pm

It was called in as a structure fire — but fortunately, it didn’t spread to the nearby home.

A Ford Aerostar van ignited next to a house on French Road in the BX around 5 pm Wednesday, and the orchard workers who lived there used a hose to keep it from spreading.

“The occupants had just driven home about 45 minutes earlier. They were in the house cooking supper, they smelled smoke, looked out and saw the Aerostar van fully engulfed,” says Bill Wacey, BX Swan Lake fire chief

Wacey says their crews fully doused it when they arrived a few minutes later.

Some trees near the house were burned, and the home has some scarring.

He says the cause wasn’t suspicious, and was likely electrical.

“I would probably suggest yes. If you look at the history of Aerostars, especially from the 90’s, I think they have a bit of a track record.”

The site was just east of the fire training centre on Pottery Road, and next to an orchard.
