New Residential Care/Assisted Living Complex In Vernon Nears Completion

The first patients to move into Vernon’s newest residential care and assisted living complex should be going in, in September.

H&H Total Care Chief Operating Officer Hendrik Van Ryk says the company and Interior Health are discussing how to get the residential care beds assigned.

“Working with them very well, collaboratively and making sure that we get the right residents in the right part of the building and making sure that the whole transition for the folks that come out of hospital or community goes well.”

One hundred beds are designated for residential care.

Karen Omelchuk, Interior Health’s Residential Health Service Administrator for North Okanagan says they expect the process to take 4-6 weeks.

“These are new beds we’ve invested in in order to meet current and forecast demand. As with any residential care facility, there is a process in place across IH that determines whether residential care is the most appropriate care environment for an individual. Decisions on placement for residential care clients are made based on a number of factors including a person’s individual care needs, bed availability across multiple sites and communities, and a person’s preference for placement.”

The first of approximately 48 assisted living suites will be ready for November.

Hendrik Van Ryk says there has been a lot of interest in those.

“The latest stats are that we have about 20, 25 per cent of the units ready, spoken for in terms of interest in wanting to get in that.”

Those suites will start around 1500 dollars and will be based on size and service the occupants want.

As far as staffing goes, Van Ryk says he’s had no trouble.

“We ere initially worried because the whole Okanagan is pretty tight on staff, but the response from the community of Vernon and actually a bit of Coldstream and the surrounding area has been really good.”

About 125 staff are being hired for the complex
