No End To Parking Meter Vandalism

Vernon’s parking meters continue to be the target for vandalism.

City bylaws staff say several meters get damaged each week, and they may need to seek more funding from council for replacement parts.

The department says it appears the motivation is to get the coins from the devices.

“Although individuals have been identified and charged in the past, other individuals continue to vandalize and remove money from the meters,” says a report from Corporate Services to City council.

RCMP have been advised of the issue, and the city has been trying prevention measures such as having staff work overtime when the incidents are believed to be occurring.

“Should levels continue unabated, and with no reserve on this issue, staff may need to come back to council to approve additional funds,” says the report.
