Sovereign House Future Discussion

Aug 10, 2017 | 6:15 AM

The caretaker`s house in Sovereign Park is in for a facelift.

Sovereign House has been neglected for years, but Coldstream Council has received a list of work that needs to be done.

The estimate is 100 thousand dollars.

Mayor Jim Garlick says there are some immediate issues to look at.

“The first thing we’re doing is we`re spending some money to get a survey done of the house to identify is there asbestos present and the extent is there a significant mold problem and where is it in the house so that will be done first.”

That will cost 3500 dollars.

Drainage is also a problem.

“We’ve added in at about a 15 thousand dollar cost, we`ll be excavating around the perimeter of the house, putting in drain rock, putting in a perimeter drain.”

It will likely remain a caretaker`s house for the park.

“We`re moving in the direction that it would be a caretakers facility. Moving forward there’s been some interest in it becoming a museum park too. Right now, we’re just dealing with protecting the structure.”

.Garlick says staff have been asked to come back with recommendations on how to deal with other work.

The public will also have an opportunity to have input in the future.
