Thieves Stoop to New Lows…Looting Wildfire Victims

Aug 5, 2017 | 7:42 AM

This very disturbing story supplied by CBC News Williams Lake reveals just how low some thieves will stoop.

Two people have been charged in connection with three separate break-ins in Williams Lake that occurred while the town was under an evacuation order due to wildfire.

The report goes on to name names…Nickolas Frederick Ivany, 27, and Alana Mika Ward, 24, have been charged with possession of property which RCMP believe to have been stolen from three evacuated Williams Lake homes.

The CBC News report goes on to say the charges come after more than 10 arrests were made related to looting in Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.

RCMP say only three break-ins were reported in Williams Lake during the evacuation order, which lasted nearly two weeks. Four were reported prior to the evacuation, for a total of seven all month.

RCMP will continue to make preventing property crime a priority in areas affected by evacuation orders and alerts due to the ongoing fires.

The BC Wildfire Service says a water pump and 10 hoses were stolen this week from crews fighting a wildfire northeast of Nelson.

This addition illustrates once again thieves will steal anything…even from the very agencies putting their own safety at risk keeping others homes safe from fires.

Police are also investigating acts of mischief targeting local fire stations and trucks used to battle the wildfires.

With more than 120 fires still burning across the province, the Wildfire Service says equipment has been spread thin.
