Quick Response To Apartment Smoke

The smell of smoke led to Vernon Fire-Rescue getting called to the Capri Gardens apartments on 35th Avenue Friday afternoon.

Deputy chief Scott Hemstad says they had to forcefully enter the suite.

“Once inside we found a pot on the stove that was smoking up the apartment, and there was an occupant in the suite that was not aware what was going on. They were in a semi conscious state,” says Hemstad.

Hemstad says the new policy to staff all three fire stations for the next few weeks due to the fire danger, allowed two fire engines to respond to the fire within a few minutes, the first one in 2 minutes, and the second from the Landing hall four minutes later.

“It was nice to have the extra sets of hands there to deal with the occupant of the suite that needed assistance, and to back up the engine crew, as they were there in very short time,” says Hemstad.
