Interior Health releases review of KGH pediatric service disruption

Jun 16, 2026 | 11:35 AM

Interior Health has taken steps to strengthen pediatric care at Kelowna General Hospital following a seven-week service interruption in 2025.

The health authority released an independent review Tuesday that examined workplace and system challenges contributing to the disruption. The review, conducted by Harbour West Consulting and Dr. Jana Davidson, included interviews with pediatricians, nurses, administrators and healthcare leaders.

The report identified opportunities to improve communication, collaboration and issue escalation processes while emphasizing the need to rebuild trust among staff.

Interior Health said several recommendations are already being addressed. The pediatrics department has grown from 5.6 to 11 full-time pediatricians, while work continues on initiatives aimed at improving workplace safety, communication and staff engagement.

The health authority has also updated its medical staff governance rules and created a new Maternal, Newborn, Child and Youth program to support service planning and quality improvements across the region.

Interior Health president and CEO Sylvia Weir said the organization remains focused on improving communication, accountability and relationships across the health authority.

Officials said the work extends beyond pediatrics. A broader action plan is now underway at Kelowna General Hospital to address staffing, safety, patient flow, infrastructure and emergency department congestion.

The full report, management response and action plan have been posted on Interior Health’s website.
