Kelowna to host 2028 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games

Jan 20, 2026 | 11:19 AM

Kelowna will host the 2028 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, the first time the event will be held in British Columbia. The games are scheduled to take place from Feb. 28 to March 4 and will see about 1,300 athletes and coaches competing across multiple sports and venues throughout the city.

Sports on the schedule include curling, figure skating, speed skating, alpine skiing, five-pin bowling, snowshoeing and floor hockey or floorball. Organizers estimate the event will bring roughly $7 million in economic impact to local businesses.

The games also provide athletes with the opportunity to qualify for Team Canada at the 2029 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Switzerland.

Mayor Tom Dyas welcomed the announcement, saying it highlights Kelowna’s growing reputation as a host for national events that bring communities together and deliver benefits to the city.
