Enderby Cliffs Park to be given new First Nation name

The province has proposed renaming a park in the North Okanagan to recognize the local First Nation.

Legislation was introduced in B.C Wednesday, Feb. 19, to amend the Protected Areas of British Columbia Act, which included renaming Enderby Cliffs Park would be renamed Tplaqín/Enderby Cliffs Park, pronounced T-bla-qeen.

The legislation would also add more land to select parks, including an addition of three hectares of land and three hectares of lake shore to Cinnemousun Narrows near Sicamous.

Other amendments to the act would see the Maquinna Marine Park near Tofino renamed Nism̓aakqin Park, the addition of 104 hectares of land to Naikoon Park in Haida Gwaii, and an extra 33 hectares of land added to Wells Gray Park near Clearwater.

“Indigenous people have been stewards of the water, land and wildlife for millennia,” Tamara Davidson, Minister of Environment and Parks, stated.

“Renaming these parks to traditional Indigenous names recognizes significant cultural values and supports ongoing reconciliation with First Nations. Expanding B.C.’s parks and protected-areas system enhances protection of important ecological, recreational, cultural and historical values that make these places special.”

The proposed legislation would also see Kirby Park, near Harrison Mills, formally transferred to the Province’s Heritage Branch, while also removing one hectare from Naikoon Park, at the north end of Vancouver Island, to allow for an expansion of a neighbouring cemetary.
