Enactus Okanagan College has received a grant to help the volunteer team launch and expand student-led projects that create community and environmental impact.

Enactus OC is a student run organization that looks to shape student leaders and create positive impacts on the community through social, economic and environmental projects. The Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC) is investing in social entrepreneurs with a $25,000 grant for the organization.

The purpose of providing the grant is to support economic development projects that will have long-lasting and measurable benefits to the region.

“We are excited to see how this grant helps Enactus grow, teaching more people entrepreneurship and community development skills while generating insights and learning for future projects,” said Laurel Douglas, CEO of ETSI-BC.

The organization already runs several projects that will be scaled up with this funding, including the Unusually Good Food Co. project that combats both climate change and food insecurity by collecting unpicked and unused apples and turning them into food products like dehydrated snacks, and giving them to food banks and schools.

The funding will also be used to launch new programs, such as Rising, a social enterprise that educates youth about prevalent issues in society and provides learning modules for teachers.

Another project involves a partnership with the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society to empower Indigenous youth to channel their creativity while learning entrepreneurial skills.

“We are seeing a huge need from students who want to get connected with the community and it’s been driven by the pandemic,” said Danielle Walker, president of Enactus OC and fourth year business student.

“There is a real desire to get back to connecting with people and making a difference.”
