City clarifies cannabis regulations

May 17, 2019 | 4:15 PM

The City of Vernon has issued a release clarifying the rules surrounding cannabis legalization.

The release is in response to push back from the Russ Stevenson, the owner of Herb’s Healing Center in the Alpine Center who is refusing to close.

The city says a cannabis retailer is not allowed to get a municipal business license without a license from the provincial government.

“His issue is he doesn’t have  a provincial permit to sell cannabis,” said Mayor Victor Cumming.

“We can’t give him a business license when he doesn’t have a permit to do what he is doing,” he added.

The city’s bylaw department fined the business $1000 on Tuesday .

City officials and law enforcement asked Stevenson to close once again yesterday but speaking to Beach Radio News the owner says he was open as of 4 p.m. Friday.
