RDNO approves waste reduction programs at IPE

The Regional District of the North Okanagan voted to approve funding for the 2019 Armstrong Interior Provincial Exhibition.

The board approved $3000 for organics diversion programs at the popular event.

The IPE has been composting for four years, and this year according to the RDNO, they plan on expanding their waste reduction program to include more well labeled barrels, signage and volunteers.

According to the RDNO, 14, 912 pounds of organic waste was diverted last year.

At Wednesday’s meeting , Board members said the IPE could act as way to educate people on composting.

“In the food court, where most of the diversion took place their were thousands of people watching the volunteers separate everything, so the education value was obviously there,”said Armstrong RDNO director Shirley Fowler.

“I think that if we have a role in this, it is not to subsidize somebody’s event, but it is to piggyback on somebody’s event to say this is a critical positive, long-term thing and diversion helps us. So I think if we are going any where in this I would support this motion based on the education behind it,” said RDNO director Victor Cumming.

The material was collected from the food scraps at the food court, paper towels from the washrooms, paper plates, wooden cutlery and compostable paper cups.

The 2019 Armstrong IPE takes place August 28, 2019, to September 1, 2019.
