11th and 12th Pot Shop Applications Before City Council

May 13, 2019 | 6:10 AM

Two more pot shop applications will before Vernon council for support this afternoon, which if approved, will be the 11th and 12th.

One is in a commercial building at 2813 35th Street in the downtown, which the City says has generated eight negative responses, and a 43 name signature petition against it, along with three positive responses.

The other site is at 2808 48th Avenue, site of the current Black Crow store, which the City says has remained open since legalization, but has not been selling cannabis.

“As of October 17, 2018, due to provincial legislation, they ceased selling cannabis and the store has remained cannabis free. The store has remained open to provide educational information to customers and to sell retail products (i.e.glassware). There have been no bylaw incidents and Bylaw Enforcement has no objections to the proposed license,” writes Manager of Current Planning, Craig Broderick, in a report to council.

Broderick says the City has received 14 referrals to date from the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for non-medical cannabis retail establishments, seven of which have been for locations proposed within the primary and secondary areas of the Vernon Downtown Business Improvement Area.

“To date, Council has provided positive recommendations for ten applications and have forwarded input to the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for their review.”

Broderick says the province has not informed the City as to the status of any of the referred applications.

Council at its last meeting put a cap of no more than six cannabis stores in the downtown business improvement area.
