RDNO considering changes to scholarship

The Regional District of the North Okanagan is considering a revamp to their student scholarship.

The $500 scholarship is currently offered to students involved in 4H clubs, but the district says that finding people to apply has been a struggle.

” It’s not getting a lot of traction as far as applicants or even publicity, we are looking at not getting rid of it but maybe changing it,” said Chair Kevin Acton.

At the board meeting on Wednesday the district discussed opening the scholarship up to high school students entering the agriculture or forestry field after graduation.

” I think opening it up to include agriculture and forestry would be a good idea in regards to students here . There’s job opportunities for them in those industries and tons of universities like UBC are pushing it right now in those two sectors,” said Area “C” Director Amanda Shatzko.

A decision on the changes will be made at the next board meeting.

The scholarship is handed out during the IPE every year.
