Fentanyl Discussion For Families

Parents and students are encouraged to attend a discussion about fentanyl, put on by the Vernon School District.

Substance abuse prevention counsellor Doug Rogers says local experts will provide information on opiates, along with signs and symptoms of abuse.

“Things are changing rapidly. The notion that if you try a drug one time and it may cost you your life is in fact a reality with a drug like fentanyl,” Rogers tells Kiss FM.

Rogers isn’t aware of any local incidents involving students and fentanyl.

“Not at all. There have been no incidents here.”

The opioid caused many of the 914 drug overdoes deaths last year in BC.

“It also may be put in other substances. It may added to marijuana or any other kind of drug, so understanding that should drive our choices,” comments Rogers.

The discussion will be held at Fulton Secondary March 13th at 7 pm.

Local experts will provide information about opiates, medical uses of fentanyl, signs and symptoms of substance abuse and when and where to get help.

Rogers says all are welcome to attend.

“This is a conversation I think we need to have, and we need to have it with our kids,” adds Rogers.

Presenters will include Betty Keding – North Okanagan MH & SU Team Leader, Michelle McWhirter – Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Kerry Vance – Mental Health Liaison (School District #22), and Doug Rogers District Substance Abuse Prevention Counsellor (School District #22).
