A suspicious device discovered by a landscaping crew prompted an hours-long police response in Kelowna on Monday before investigators determined there was no threat to public safety.

Kelowna RCMP were called to the area of Barlee Road and Springfield Road at about 2:45 p.m. after workers found what appeared to be an improvised explosive device while carrying out landscaping maintenance.

Police closed the area to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic while following established protocols for a potential explosive device. The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit from the Lower Mainland was called in to examine the device.

Following a thorough assessment, investigators determined the device was inert and posed no risk to the public.

The scene was cleared shortly after 11:15 p.m., allowing roads and pedestrian access to reopen.

Kelowna RCMP thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while officers and specialized units worked to ensure the area was safe.
