Sentencing for pair involved in robbery, assault, to continue in the new year

Two men facing numerous charges relating to a robbery and assault will learn their sentences in early 2025.

The B.C. Prosecution service said sentencing hearing for Stewart Tkachuk and Edward Coghill began in Vernon Friday, Dec. 13, and will continue at the courthouse on January 10.

Tkachuk and Coghill were found guilty of several charges by a trial judge in June of 2024.

The charges, stemming from the incident that took place in September of 2019, are:

Coghill:

  • Break and enter and commit indictable offence
  • Commit robbery where a firearm is used
  • Discharge a firearm with intent to wound/disfigure
  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm
  • Disguising face with intent to commit an offence
  • Unlawful confinement or imprisonment
  • Aggravated assault
  • Possession of a firearm without a license and/or registration

Tkachuk:

  • Break and enter and commit indictable offence
  • Commit robbery where a firearm is used
  • Discharge a firearm with intent to wound/disfigure
  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm
  • Disguising face with intent to commit an offence
  • Unlawful confinement or imprisonment
  • Aggravated assault
  • Possession of a firearm without a license and/or registration
  • Possession of a firearm, etc., contrary to an order

The pair were first charged in April of 2022, and warrants were issued for their arrests, though Tkachuk fled and was only apprehended in May of 2024.

Tkachuk was being held in custody over the summer and during the trial, and remained in custody following the sentencing hearing Friday.

Coghill remained on release order Friday with house arrest and electronic monitoring.
