New Vernon pub opens doors

Jun 6, 2022 | 3:15 PM

It was a successful “soft opening” for a new eating and drinking establishment in Vernon.

The 1516 Pub and Grill in the former Blue Heron and Waterfront Pub site on Okanagan Landing Road opened over the weekend, with no fanfare or advertizing, which is known as a soft opening.

Owners say the debut on Sunday went very well with guests enjoying the new menu and sunny patio.

“The somewhat rainy weather was a blessing as it certainly slowed down the patio crowd on opening weekend. A soft opening is never a bad thing,” said Katie Dahl, vice president of the Dahl Group, the Vernon company that owns it.

Stefan Tobler, the brew master at Okanagan Spring Brewery in Vernon, was on hand.

Tobler’s family brought 1516 Lager to Canada.

“It was the purity law of 1516 that inspired the name for 1516 Pub and Grill,” Dahl explained. “Written by Bavarian noblemen in the year 1516, the law says only water, barley and hops may be used to brew beer. Yeast was added to the list, known as the beer purity law or Reinheitsgebot, when scientists discovered the fermenting agent centuries later.”

Dahl said the new business also has a culture of quality ingredients

“Our four principles of quality, integrity, customer satisfaction and a reasonable profit – mirror the law of 1516 Purity.”

Dahl said they continue to hire the best team members possible.

“If you are dedicated to high end service and great food – come join our team. This business of labour shortages – we are ignoring that,” she said.
