B.C. Covid update: 148 new cases; 5 in Interior

B.C.’s new Covid case count took another jump today, with 148.

That includes five new cases in Interior Health (IH).

There are 34 active cases in IH with no one in hospital.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, also reported 1,371 active cases with 61 people in hospital and 20 in critical or intensive care.

The number of people under active health monitoring due to exposure to known COVID cases is 3,417.

There has been two more COVID-related deaths, both in the Fraser Health region, for a provincial total of 229.

The is one new health care outbreak in the Vancouver Coastal region and no new community outbreaks.

Henry talked about school exposure events, saying there is now about 30 of those (cases) around B.C., with all reported on the BC Centre for Disease Control website.

“That is not surprising, We have over 2,000 schools across the province with millions of students going back last week. This is to be expected,” stated Henry.

There have been no exposures in schools in District 22 (Vernon) or District 83 (North Okanagan Shuswap).

There have been no COVID outbreaks in schools.

Definitions:

Exposure: A single person with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period.

Cluster: Two or more individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period. The cases may be linked to school-based transmission.

Outbreak: Multiple individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection when transmission is likely widespread within the school setting.

In all of these cases, public health will investigate, interview the case and conduct contact tracing.
