BCHL’s Silverbacks fire head coach

Dec 30, 2019 | 1:48 PM

It’s black Monday for Scott Atkinson.

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks announced Atkinson was relieved of his head coaching duties, effective immediately.

“We want to thank Scotty for his commitment to the Silverbacks organization,” Silverbacks’ General Manager Brooks Christensen said. “Scotty left a lasting impression on all of Salmon Arm minor hockey and helped grow our connection with the Salmon Arm community.”

Atkinson was hired by the Backs in June, 2017 and compiled a 72-69-8-2-1 record in two-and-a-half seasons behind the bench.

This season, Salmon Arm began the year 19-6-1 before falling into a 1-8-1 slide leading into the winter break, according to statistics supplied by the team.

Assistant Coach Tyler Shattock is stepping in as interim head coach.

“He has the organization’s full support in his new position,” Christensen said.

From Salmon Arm, Shattock played four full seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Kamloops Blazers before ending his career with the Calgary Hitmen.

In 2009 he was drafted in the fourth round of the NHL draft by the St Louis Blues.

Shattock played four seasons in the American Hockey League before heading to Europe.
