Update: Businesses Evacuated After Gas Leak

Update: 3:30 p.m.

RCMP have issued details about this morning’s incident:

“A vehicle was pulling out of a parking spot and hit a gas meter,” says Constable Kelly Brett. “No injuries and no MVA (Motor Vehicle Act) charges were laid.  The surrounding area was evacuated as a precaution until Fortis could shut off the gas.”


Update: 10:45 a.m.

The gas leak has been capped, the evacuations have been lifted, and streets have reopened.


10 a.m.

Crews have closed off access to 34th Street and 31st Avenue after an SUV hit the gas lines at the back of the Surplus Herby’s building.

Patients and staff were asked by police to leave the Vernon Family Practice and Hogarth’s Pharmacy on 34st Street just after 10 am on Wednesday morning.

No word yet on the condition of  the driver of the SUV that hit the gas line.
