School District 22 approved a new policy that allows the physical restraint and seclusion of students in certain circumstances.

The policy states that physical restraint can only be used in district schools “in exceptional circumstances where the behavior of a student poses imminent danger of serious physical harm to self and/or others, and where less restrictive interventions have been ineffective in ending imminent danger or serious physical harm.”

Teachers and staff members must receive proper training before being allowed to physically restrain a student.

The policy also states that students with behavior that compromises the safety of themselves and others need to be supported through documentation and a review of their educational needs.
