Meeting Set on Hullcar

Aug 23, 2017 | 6:06 AM

A meeting planned for Thursday over the Hullcar Aquifer in Spallumcheen is appreciated, but not what a group trying to protect it is looking for.

Al Price with the Save Hullcar Aquifer Team will meet with Assistant Deputy Environment Minister Jennifer McGuire.

Price asked for a public meeting in the Hullcar Hall to talk about the review the government will conduct.

“She said there is not enough time, and probably what they would do is, after the review is done, they would come back for a public meeting and consultation and information ,” Price tells Kiss FM.

Price asks what the sense is having consultation after a review.

He wants all the people of the region to have a voice.

Price says it’s almost like going back to square one.

“It is. We’ve had some — the best way to put it is — unsuccessful meetings that the Ministry of Environment has organized.”

Price says he was hoping the ministry would have a change of approach.

The government already ordered a review, but Price says he’ll bring up non-negotiable issues.

“To start with, this is a public health problem. It’s being framed as a nutrient management problem, but it’s a public health problem, and they have to stop the contamination. There is no other choice.”

Price says he’s heard the farmer whose land is involved has stopped the manure spreading for now, but he’s not sure what’s happened.
