The area at the foot of Black Mountain in Kelowna is a little blacker today after a grass fire yesterday afternoon along Highway 33 right by Black Mountain Drive.

Personnel from all four Kelowna Fire Halls went to the scene and got it under control before it could go up a hill toward some homes.

Crews from BC Wildfire along with a tanker and helicopter were called in, but the aircraft were not needed.

Kelowna Fire Department was there all night making sure there were no flare ups.

Officials say a grass fire in the Black Mountain area of Kelowna is no longer spreading.

Melanie Morin from the BC Wildfire Service says the blaze started this afternoon off Highway 33.

“The fire is currently estimated at 1.5 hectares in size and is considered being held. There are six firefighters assigned to this incident. The information I have is that no structures are being threatened,” Morin tells Kiss FM.

The Kelowna Fire Department also responded to the fire.
