Not Hard To Find Distracted Drivers

Aug 18, 2017 | 5:35 PM

Distracted drivers in parts of the Okanagan are not getting the message.

RCMP say they handed out tickets to over 25 drivers allegedly using an electronic device while driving, and/or not wearing their seat belts in Kelowna.

The violations were noted during a 90 minute deployment along Springfield Road Thursday.

The remainder of the fines issued were for failing to wear seat belts.

RCMP say there were also numerous vehicles that were not able to be stopped for either seat belt or cell phone violations as all of the traffic members were tied up with another motorist.

One of the distracted drivers stopped during the blitz was noted to have five previous convictions for the same offence.

“The fine for using an electronic device while driving remains at $368,” says Cpl. Tania Carroll. “By taking your attention off of the roadway for even just a moment you greatly increase the chance of being involved in a collision.”
