Winter Carnival Seeks Options For Parade Float

The Vernon Winter Carnival Society and it’s Queen’s committee will be looking at options to maintain a parade float for its royalty.

City council decided this week to no longer support the operation of its float for Queen Silver Star, concerned about the maintenance costs, and safety issues.

Carnival chair Deb White says there may be other ways to go.

“If we can find a sponsor to help us with the float, that would be fantastic. It’s definitely something we will look into.”

White is disappointed the city had opted out of the program.

“It’s sad they have chosen to go away with the float. It would be nice if they helped us find us find a new float for Queen Silver Star.”

The float has been used since 1991 to showcase the City and royalty at parades, but has only been used once this year.

“The way that float got started — it was a couple of fathers of the queens that put it together, so it hasn’t been kept up to standards, so to speak,” adds White.

Mayor Akbal Mund said after Monday’s council meeting the carnival society could approach a car dealership to get private sponsorship.

“Every group have to start realizing it’s not the City’s jurisdiction to keep them afloat and keep them going.”

The float’s maintenance bill each year is $9,500, and the Queen’s Committee has asked the City to replace the float which would cost $30 thousand.
