Communication & Consistency Key For Effective Okanagan Rail Trail

The Mayors of Coldstream and Lake Country and Regional District of North Okanagan Board Chair Bob Fleming have had a talk about what happens with the Okanagan Rail Trail once it’s developed.

Timing prevented officials from Kelowna to be at the gathering.

Bob Fleming says there are some questions that need answering.

“Will each community work on its own? The answer is probably yes.I think there has to be some sort of coordination of effort.”

He says there has to be some consistency so people using the trail don’t find the rules constantly change.

He gives an example of people walking their dogs along the trail and coming upon an area where dogs are not allowed.

Another question is how is the money raised for construction going to be applied?

“There was a cost put together for construction to a certain level and funds are being raised to that level to make a certain grade of trail end-to-end, right from the south to the north. And that’s still the goal, but obviously the costs in each area are somewhat different.”

And that’s why, Fleming says, everyone has to sit down and sort things out.

” What do we do? How do we start? How are communities accessing the funds that have been raised? What’s the plan as we move through the construction?

Fleming is putting together notes from his meeting with Coldstream’s Jim Garlick and Lake Country’s James Baker and will send them off to other stakeholders.

He’s hoping for a full meeting of everyone involved by November.
