Spallumcheen Wants Meeting At UBCM On Hullcar

Aug 10, 2017 | 10:24 AM

Spallumcheen Mayor Janice Brown is hoping for a meeting with Environment Minister George Heyman at the UBCM conference in September.

Brown is encouraged by the government’s announcement of a review of the Hullcar Aquifer.

Spallumcheen Council hopes to convince Heyman another moratorium on manure spraying is needed.

“That’s what we really want. It seems like such an easy solution but we got a lot of push back from the Minister of Environment at the time and the dairyman’s association.”

Council discussed this week how to make itself clear and Brown hopes Premier John Horgan will agree to be part of the meeting.

She says it’s simple there needs to be an immediate halt to spraying.

“That we just put a moratorium because there have been two spreads in the last two months and in the farmer’s report it shows that there’s going to be another couple and it would be really nice just to say no.”

Brown says the ground is already saturated and doesn’t need any more manure.
