Tuition Fees Eliminated For Adult Education

Premier John Horgan has followed through on an election promise regarding education.

Horgan announced this morning he is scrapping tuition fees for Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs.

He said the government wants to make it easier for people to get ahead.

“It’s our view that education is the great equalizer in our society. It’s an opportunity to open doors on good paying jobs and open doors on self awareness and self-actualization. Finding your way in the world is easier when you have access to knowledge.”

The Premier went on to say that he believes education is a right for everyone.

“New Canadians who want a head start by improving their language skills, students getting ready for university, adult learners going back to school to upgrade their skills so they can improve their opportunities or just getting a high school diploma.”

The former Liberal government imposed fees in 2015, which Horgan says created a void.

“Over the past number of years, there’s been a 35 per cent decline in enrollment as a result of the increased cost imposed by the previous government and that’s meant thousands of people have missed out on an opportunity to make life better for themselves and their families.”

He also says the move is also about making a long-term investment in BC’s economy.

Horgan didn’t announce what the move will cost the government, saying it will be in the budget statement in September.

He said it may be a challenge for administrators to handle, but anyone who prepaid for this fall will get a refund.
