Completion Of Water Main For Silver Star On Hold

Aug 8, 2017 | 6:37 AM

Plans to complete a water main replacement for the Silver Star Community Water Utility are on hold.

Construction of a new main began 2015 with the first phase completed that fall.

Plans were to begin the 2nd and third phases this year with work put out to tender in June.

But Herman Halvorson, chair of the RDNO’s Electoral Advisory Committee says the bids were too high.

“The lines are okay. They’re not going to pressured like it’s got to be reacted to right now. They felt the bids came in a little bit high so they’re
maybe going to put that off for a year a rebid it.”

The lowest bid was almost 125 thousand dollars over what was budgeted.

Going with that would have required taking too much money out of the reserve that provides emergency funding.

The first phase replacement of 195 metres.

Another 850 metres of the water main needs to be replaced.

Silver Star gets water from various wells and surface sources and storage capacity in two reservoirs is considered sufficient to provide water for several months without any supply from the wells connected to the main.
