City Adds Firefighters In Outlying Areas

Aug 3, 2017 | 12:34 PM

The City of Vernon is going to provide extra staffing at its two outlying fire halls due to the extreme fire danger.

Mayor Akbal Mund says council has approved deploying two career firefighters and two paid on-call volunteers at both the Landing (Station #2) and Predator Ridge (Station #3) halls.

“It’s for the next four to five weeks, so that if we do have an incident, we can respond to it accordingly,” Mund tells Kiss FM after a special meeting of council Thursday.

Mund says the extra staffing will be from 10 am to 8 pm daily, and will allow for a quicker response to any fires.

He says the measure will cost an extra $79,000.

“We’ll get that from our our un-expended expenditure from last year,” says Mund

Station #1 in downtown Vernon will still be manned by five career firefighters including dispatch.
