OKIB Flood Recovery Continues

The Okanagan Indian Band is busy trying to restore normality to its lands after the Okanagan lake flooding.

The evacuation order issued for all properties below the High Road at Louis Estates was withdrawn yesterday.

Residents are encouraged to exercise care and make their own determination of longer term risk from possible slope failure.

Meanwhile, debris management and sandbag removal continues along Westside Road.

There are roughly 400 thousand sandbags to be removed.

Residents are advised they can pile them up at the top of their access roads for pick up.

On the Vernon side of the lake, A dangerous tree assessment is scheduled for today of the trees on Sandy Beach along Lakeshore Drive next to Kin Beach.

Most were under water during the flooding and a determination of their safety is needed due to possible erosion.

That’s why the danger/closed signs remain up, although many people have been ignoring them.

The signs will remain up until the trees are cleared, if needed, and the Gabion baskets are removed.

Crews are removing the water quality signs along the beach as well.

Recent tests have indicated the water is within health standards.
