Bull BS in Lumby

An indoor bull riding event and barn dance planned for Lumby next month is getting criticism all the way from Lower Mainland.

The Vancouver Humane Society wants it cancelled claiming the animals will be caused distress for the sake of human amusement.

Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton says it seems more like misplaced concern.

“Honestly I kind of thought the day of the criticism of bull riding was over. There are such stringent rules put in place for animal safety and security and the bulls are kept well and healthy. It seems to me they have a pretty good life in front of them.”

Acton defends the rodeo event and treatment of the animals and he hopes to turn this negative into a positive.

“A little bit of negative publicity will get people paying attention and talking about it. I know that on Facebook there has been a lot of chit-chat back and forth and controversy. With a little bit of controversy, normally comes a lot of exposure.”

Acton says the worst part about this issue, is this event is a charity fundraiser for the local hockey rink.

“It’s being geared towards expanding on what’s already happening at the arena to give our young athletes and citizens opportunities to be more successful and healthy. It’s a great opportunity for us.”

The event April 22nd is being held to raise more money for renovations and expansion of the Pat Duke Memorial Arena.
