Management Change to Dike District
The Township of Spallumcheen is taking over management of the Fortune Creek Drainage Dike District.
The Province is delisting the dike and it will now be called the Fortune Creek Flood Management Berm.
Spallumcheen Mayor Janice Brown says a contract just needs to be signed and the Province will provide $500-thousand dollars to upgrade and fix the current dike.
“Basically the right of way that is on there with the dike will have to come off and we will have to get new right of ways that show the Township of Spallumcheen. The Government will then give us the money and the work will start.”
Acquiring easement and right of way access from property owners along the creek is the first priority though.
“We will have to go and get them to sign a form and then it will go to a lawyer to get the easement or right of way registered before we can send big equipment in there.”
Once those elements have been finalized repairs and upgrades to the berm will get underway.
“We will get the money from the Province and it will sit in a reserve account for Fortune Creek. Then we will have to go out to tender on all the work that needs to be done and then we’ll be good to go.”
