Police See Drivers On Phones — But Can’t Ticket Them

Police in Vernon say they were unable to keep up with all the drivers using cell phones during a recent enforcement.

Officers issued 15 tickets for using an electronic device during a two hour operation Friday on 27th Street.

“At least 15 more drivers were seen on their cell phones but were unable to be stopped by police because of safety concerns and timing,” says Cst. Gary McLaughlin of North Okanagan Traffic Services.

“This means that, on average, there was a distracted driver passing this police operation every four minutes.”

Police say distracted driving and inattention is a leading factor to motor vehicle crashes in BC, along with drug or alcohol-affected driving, and speeding.

“Drivers who use hand held devices are four times more likely to get into collisions,” says Cst. Jocelyn Noseworthy.
