District #22 Boundary Review to Begin

The Vernon School District’s Boundary Review committee has had it’s terms of reference spelled out.
It will conduct a review of catchment areas in Greater Vernon and review French Immersion and Montessori program locations to determine what if, any changes need to be made with respect to space or transportation requirements.
Board Chair Kelly Smith says student movement could result from their findings.
“Once a school is full students have to go to another school especially if class size and composition is being adhered too. When a class is full, its full, and if your child moves into the neighbourhood you may have to make a choice of another school.”
Smith says the contract negotiations between the Province and teachers union will have a bearing on what happens as well.
“Because class size and composition also governs how many staff we need. Hiring has to begin, hopefully not in August, but early enough so that classes can be set up appropriately for the start of school.”
Smith says this could also determine future infrastructure needs.
“We don’t know which schools will have room and which schools won’t have enough room. There may be some urgent changes that we have to make for next year, but normally boundary reviews would not happen without community input.”
The boundary review committee is expected to file a report by May 7th with a final one due June 14.
Vernon Secondary and Coldstream Elementary are both considered full schools at the moment and interest at Baeirsto is at an all-time high.
